Veronika is old enough that she doesn’t need “baby food” anymore, and the best way to develop a love of healthy foods in your little one is to savor them together. I love making recipes that my two kids (and the grown-ups!) can share together now. To wit, this kid-friendly version of guacamole is a hit with everyone at the table.

Scoop the flesh from two avocados and transfer to a bowl; mash.

Stir in 2 teaspoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice and 1 chopped tomato.

I served the guac with cucumber sticks and bell pepper sticks, as well as toasted pita bread. You could also add toasted bread slices or roasted carrot sticks.

Mini Pepper Guacamole Dippers

Miniature anything is fun for kids. Dipping anything is fun for kids. Ergo here is the perfect summer snack!

Whip up a batch of your family’s favorite guacamole – anything from mild to spicy. For my picky preschooler, this is sometimes just as simple as squeezing a little lime juice into freshly mashed avocado. Sometimes we get a little fancier.

Big kids can dip mini bell peppers right into the guac. Slice the peppers into strips for smaller kids.

Kids don’t like guacamole? Try stuffing the mini pepper halves with non-dairy cream cheese instead.

At a recent hotel stay, Travis’s favorite channel on the room’s TV was… Food Network! A boy after his mama’s heart. So when we got home, we staged our own “Food Network kitchen” and whipped up this recipe, care of High Five magazine.

Adults, first cut an avocado in half and remove the pit. Let your child scoop the flesh into a bowl and mash with a potato masher. Travis loved this tool!

1 tablespoon fresh-squeezed lime juice, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic (adults can do the mincing ahead of time; Travis loved the way the cloves of garlic smelled!)

We served our “test kitchen” masterpiece with cut up cucumbers, orange and red bell pepper strips, and bean tortilla chips.
