Water Balloon Catch and More

Water Balloon Toss (1)

It isn’t summer until you’ve pulled out the water balloons! Today Travis and Veronika both wanted in on the action, so we included both toddler-friendly and bigger kid ways to play.

For Veronika, it was all about introducing this fantastic summer activity, since she was too little last summer. She was amazed watching me fill the balloons, and squished one around in her hands with delight as soon as the cold water filled it.

Try and teach your toddler to catch with gentle tosses back and forth. A hot morning means it’s no problem if one explodes in the process!

Then try a little target practice. I drew a chalk target on the patio, and encouraged Veronika to toss her water balloons right on top of it.

She wasn’t exactly on target, but she sure loved the splat they made no matter where they fell!

Big brother Travis needed something a little more sophisticated. Cue the water balloon pinata! I had envisioned making this out of five or six water balloons, filled and strung up from a tree.

But he was so impatient for the fun to begin we only had a two-balloon pinata. Take a whack with a baseball bat and watch the explosion!

After that I simply made Travis a big pile of filled balloons to do with as he saw fit.

He squished them, he squeezed them, he bounced them, he imagined they were a water balloon family, he smooshed them between his toes. And more!

7 Fun, Wet Water Balloon Activities

Fun Water Balloon (2)

Because we don’t have a hose and a water balloon nozzle, this summer staple of fun is not something Travis has enjoyed very often. Cue the water balloon hand pump! Now that I’ve invested in one (from Amazon), there are so many backyard games to play with our little water balloons. And some are even educational!

First: Sort by Color. Purchase a few buckets from a local dollar store in a variety of colors and have your child fill the correct bucket with the correct balloons.

Easy for Travis!

Second: Number Race. I numbered 10 balloons with sharpie and Travis’s job was to move them from one bucket to another in the correct order.

Fun Water Balloon (7)

This one involved a few slippery balloons running away before the task was complete.

If two or more kids are playing, make it a race!

Third: Target Game. Now we got a bit messier! I drew a bull’s-eye and we each had three balloons to toss.

The person with the highest score wins, extra points for a big splash!

Travis adored this.

Which led us to…

Fourth: Balloon Toss! You can’t go wrong with this classic. Just toss back and forth and see who gets wet.

It meant lots of exploding balloons and lots of giggles.

Fifth: Relay Race. If you have a group, make it a true relay; balance a balloon on a cup and make it from point A to point B. Since Travis and I were playing just the two of us, we timed ourselves to see who could do it faster.

Sixth: Balloon Sensory Tub. Float a few balloons in a baby bathtub. Even baby sister Veronika got to enjoy a (supervised) feel. Travis loved throwing the balloons into the tub for a big splash, of course!

Fun Water Balloon (6)

Seventh: Balloon “Parachute”. Place a few filled balloons on a sheet or large towel and pop them like popcorn.

And with all those games said and done, Travis really just loved splatting them onto the ground for maximum splashy fun!

Water Balloon Yo-yo

Here’s the perfect water balloon activity for smaller kids who aren’t ready for a good old-fashioned water balloon fight!

Something I didn’t know until now: in order to fill water balloons, you need a special nozzle that attaches only to an outside spigot – our indoor sink didn’t work for this one! That meant we had to wait until a day at the relatives’ house to have fun.

Fill up water balloons and tie off.

Cut long rubber bands open, and tie one to each balloon. Now they bounce up and down like yo-yos for endless enjoyment.

These were Travis’s first water balloons, and he loved how squishy they are.

And of course, pelting daddy with a surprise handful is still fun, once the elastics slip off!
