Include Yourself in Photos

Boston (12)

Today’s activity for your six-month-old is more for you, parents, a reminder to take pictures not just of that adorable baby, but also of yourself!

For the longest time, I had a policy of zero pictures of adults on this blog; I wanted the focus to be on the kids.

That policy had to change slightly once Veronika was born. Since a newborn can’t support herself, and many blogs demanded her presence in my arms, bits of me began to creep into pictures.

But the more I thought about it, the more my insistence on kids-only seemed silly. We love to stage manage our children for pictures, but then we get left out of the memories!

This past weekend, on a family vacation, I made a point: To include myself in the pictures. To be part of the memories.

Don’t worry if you haven’t had time to shower, or put on makeup, or if your shirt has milk stains and paint stains. These are all badges of honor of this crazy, joyful time that is parenting young kids. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So after more than 1,300 blog posts, here I am!

Include Yourself

Start a News Book

News Book (5)

Often, one parent is home with a child while the other is at work, or perhaps you and your spouse take turns and you both feel like you occasionally miss out on baby’s “news.” Either way, babies change so quickly that it can feel like you miss a lot, even in 24 hours. Enter this idea of a “news book” about your baby’s day. Although it would be tough to keep up this activity on a regular basis, it’s great for a day when your know another family member might feel left out.

You can take pictures on your phone and just forward them along, but there’s something about the instant camera that’s so much more fun. At various points throughout Veronika’s day today, I snapped a quick pic.

Starting with early playtime!

I arranged the photos into a simple lined notebook, nothing fancy. If you want, though, decorate with photo corners, illustrations, or scrapbook stickers! I labeled each photo, and added the approximate time. Nap time, Daddy!

And here she is at play in a fun local museum.

Older siblings may enjoy taking pictures, too, which is a nice way to get them involved in a younger sibling’s day.

You can also note any milestones that happen, perhaps if baby rolls for the first time. We made a note of Veronika’s first tooth poking through the gums!

At the end of the day, we left a sweet note for Daddy to find so he could share in our day, even if he was home after the rest of us were asleep!

Test the Grasp Reflex

Grasp REflex (6)

Babies are born with several reflexes, such as the rooting reflex (turning to follow with an open mouth if the side of the mouth is touched) and the Moro reflex (that particular, funny way in which babies startle).

But perhaps the cutest is the grasp reflex. Your little one’s tiny hand is remarkably strong, and if you stroke the palm, those mini fingers will grasp tightly.

Grasp Reflex (3)

Test your baby’s reflex at a quiet moment by placing your pointer finger in his or her palm. Almost certainly the little hand will clench shut. Snap a pic if you can, and encourage siblings to test out how strong the newest member of the family is, too! Not only are you creating a sweet memento, but you’re double-checking your baby’s healthy reflexes in the process.

Print out the photos and place in a small frame. These would be lovely to display somewhere in the nursery… Or tuck them into your newly created Memory Box!

Forced Perspective Photos

Perspective Photo (1)

For kids who love playing with cameras and learning about photography, this nifty trick is a great way to sneak in learning with the fun. Stage photos with one object near the lens and one person far away for a lesson on perspective!

The idea is to show your child how something close to the lens looks giant, and something further away looks smaller. You can have lots of fun with this, holding up your child’s toys near the lens, and staging various scenes, as with Travis blowing up a giant balloon, above.

And here he is hoisting a whole helicopter!

Here’s one that didn’t work quite so well, trying to push a police car out of the way:

He got such a kick out of seeing the photos as we scrolled through after, and wanted a chance to try as well.

I can’t say that his snaps with the Instax instant camera came out perfectly, but he sure had fun trying!

What silly scenes will you capture to show perspective? Please share ideas in the comments!
