This tropical smoothie is a great way to start the day with an extra vitamin C boost, perfect for keeping those little immune systems strong!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1 small banana, peeled and sliced
  • 3/4 cup orange juice
  • 3/4 cup almond milk
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.

This unexpected flavor combination takes my kids’ two favorite fruits and mashes them together into one perfect smoothie. Use plain soy milk instead of the almond milk if you prefer less sugar.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup frozen cantaloupe chunks
  • 1/2 cup papaya chunks
  • 1 cup vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.

This easy smoothie packs a healthy, fruity punch, and the purple color is fun for kids! The quantities below make four generous portions. Halve the recipe if you don’t want as big a batch.

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup apple juice
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender, and process until smooth.

This milkshake uses non-dairy yogurt and almond milk for creaminess, instead of ice cream. It’s the perfect healthy treat for after (home) school!

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 8 ounces vanilla non-dairy yogurt
  • 1 cup vanilla almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.

 

Mighty Chocolate Smoothies

These power-packed smoothies are sure to send your kids off to school with some extra energy! Make a double batch because grown-ups love it, too.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup vanilla rice milk
  • 2 cups packed baby spinach
  • 6 to 8 chopped and pitted dates
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 and 1/2 cups frozen strawberries
  1. Combine the milk, spinach, and dates in a blender; process until smooth
  2. Add the cocoa powder and strawberries and blend again until smooth.

This rockin’ green smoothie was the perfect way to start off an all-things-green St. Patrick’s Day!

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup packed spinach
  • 10 mint leaves
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup ice
  1. Peel and pit the avocado, and peel the banana.
  2. Combine the avocado and banana in a blender with the remaining ingredients. Process until smooth.

When you shop for the smoothie ingredients, throw in a little Irish scavenger hunt – we looked for potatoes, oats, cabbage, soda bread, and other traditional favorites.

You can also teach your kids a little about traditional Irish symbols, like the shamrock or the claddagh ring.

Berry Coconut Smoothie Bowl

Berry Smoothie BowlThis breakfast bowl will give a powerful boost to your kiddo’s day. I love that it’s packed with superfoods, and kids just love that it tastes good.

Ingredients:

  • 10 ounces coconut yogurt
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/4 cup cashews
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
  • 2 tablespoons coconut water
  • 1 tablespoon shredded coconut
  • 1 tablespoon cacao nibs
  • Strawberries, for serving
  1. In a blender, combine the yogurt, frozen strawberries, cashews, flaxseed, and coconut water; process until smooth.
  2. Divide the mixture evenly between two bowls, and sprinkle evenly with the shredded coconut and cacao nibs. Add extra berries for serving, if desired!

Juicy Blueberry Smoothie

This month’s recipe offering from High Five magazine involved lots of fun equipment. Juicers and blenders and spoons, oh my!

Ingredients:

  • 1 orange
  • 2 cups fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup white grape juice
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Plain non-dairy yogurt
  1. Adults, cut the orange in half, and then help your child squeeze on a juicer to extract 1/4 cup fresh orange juice – definitely my son’s favorite step!Blueberry Smoothie (1)
  2. Combine the orange juice in a blender with the blueberries, white grape juice, water, and cinnamon. Process until blended.Blueberry Smoothie (3)
  3. Pour the smoothie into cups. If desired, spoon a dollop of non-dairy yogurt on top just before serving.

Chunky Monkey Smoothie

This is a power-packed smoothie that my son and husband both love! One batch makes enough for about 2 adult portions or about 4 child-sized portions. Look for vegan protein powder brands such as Vega or Biochem Fitness.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups frozen banana slices
  • 1 cup loosely-packed baby spinach
  • 1/4 cup cashew butter
  • 3 tablespoons chocolate protein powder
  • 3 tablespoons shredded coconut
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 2 cups plain coconut milk
  1. Combine all of the ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. Enjoy!
